The Eagle and Condor Prophecy with Otomi-Toltec Caretaker, Mindahi Bastida
[video]: A 500-year-old prophecy revealing the root cause of our earth crisis and a guide towards recovery.
Mindahi Bastida Muñoz lives and breathes the stories of his people. Born in Tultepec, Lerma, Mexico, he is a caretaker of Otomi-Toltec traditions and has been the Otomi-Toltec Ritual Ceremony Officer since 1998.
Mindahi is President of the Mexico Council of Sustainable Development, and an author, scholar and speaker, serving as delegate and board member to numerous organizations and commissions on indigenous and environmental rights. He is the Director and Chief Leader of the Grand Council of the Eagle and the Condor (The Earth Elders) and serves as consultant for UNESCO on sacred sites and bioculture and to other UN Programs.
With a lifetime dedicated to the preservation of sacred, indigenous ways, Mindahi graciously sat down with us to share the Eagle and Condor Prophecy. This narrative provides context for the collective chaos we are experiencing and highlights the potential for a profound transformation ahead.
The Eagle and Condor Prophecy
Originating in the Amazon, the prophecy has been shared orally across many Indigenous cultures over time. While the intricacies of the story adapt locally, the main theme remains consistent.
The Eagle represents the global North, with its intellect, industry and masculine way of moving with force and action through the modern world. The Condor represents the global South, with its intuition and feminine, harmonious way of living with Nature and leading from the heart.
According to the prophecy, in 1490 we entered into a 500 year cycle where human civilization would be split, and the way of the Eagle would dominate the way of the Condor, this imbalance would push the Condor to the brink of extinction, causing irreversible damage to nature. It has been said that at the end of this cycle, in 1990, the potential for a new era and paradigm would emerge.
We are currently living through what is referred to as a ‘Pachakuti’, a chaotic chain of events or catastrophe that precedes a great rebalancing for the world. This is the period where the Condor is bracing the winds to rise up and fly in unison with the Eagle. When they do, it will be a time of reconciliation and healing for the land and its peoples.
The prophecy envisions the harmony and peace that can be obtained when the global North and the global South reunite, combining their original knowledge, strength and diversity for a new way of being. The emergence of which has the capacity to balance the masculine and feminine, and ultimately, unlock a new potential for society to evolve towards flourishing.
Father Sky is crying. Mother Earth is crying and saying that we are sick. The prophecy is telling us that we can recover health.
We can recover reciprocity with life. It's about recovering intention with intention in our lives, so we can educate ourselves and others.
Institutions, corporations, nation-states (especially nation-states) — need to come back to this path of life, to be transformed, or disappear, because nothing is forever. In the infinite time and space, everything is changing, everything is changing.
When we talk about this prophecy, we are talking about the unity in diversity — how can we play a beautiful symphony together?
INL: This prophecy, like many others, aligns its timeline and context with our current planetary crisis. The golden thread that weaves them all together is humanity’s perceived separation from Nature as the root cause.
When we witness humanity as Nature, we remember that we are subject to the same laws. It is clear that we are in a season of radical transformation. Our old ways must die to emerge anew. By embracing the message of the Eagle and Condor, we can move towards a future of unity, respect, and a more balanced connection with the world around us.
